Parassini Kadavu Temple

Parassini Kadavu Temple,Mangalore, India Travel Built on the banks of the Vallapattanam River and situated 18 kilometres northeast of Kannur, this is one of the most important pilgrim centres in Kannur. This three-tiered white brick and mortar temple is locally known as Parassini Madapura, an important centre of the Muthappan cult and Theyyam.

Though a religious component is a common factor in almost all dance forms, a Theyyam performances is usually charged with a spiritual energy, the performer under the spell of a heightened consciousness; for Theyyam portrays the personification of different Hindu deities.


At Parassini Kadavu, all visitors can go around the temple and even see the inner sanctorum, unlike most temples in Kerala that are closed to non - Hindus. The temple’s non conformist nature is also evident in the unusual custom of offering dried fish and toddy to the deity. A Kathakali club in the temple arranges shows on request for a fee (around 1,000 rupees). The performance begins after 11 pm and lasts for two and a half hours.

Rajarajeshwara Temple

Raja Rajeshwara Temple- Karimnagar This temple in Kerala is one of the most revered temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the most renowned pilgrim centres in Kannur. The Shiva linga here is believed to be thousands of years old. An unusual custom here is that women are allowed inside only after eight in the evening, as it is believed that Lord Shiva is with Paravati at that point and therefore will grant women their wishes.

Kottiyoor Shiva Temple

The Shiva Temple at Kottiyoor, also known as Varanasi of the south, is an important pilgrim centres in Kannur. There are actually two temples here located in a forested area-Akkara and Ikkara Kottiyoor on the banks of a river. During May-June every year, a 28 day festival that begins with Neyyattam and ends with Thrikulasatha draws devotees from far and wide.

During Neyyattam, a sword with deep religious significance, kept in Muthirikavu in Tavinal village, is brought to the Ikkara Kottiyoor to mark the beginning of the celebrations. Ghee is poured onto the sword as a mark of devotion. Another ritual performed during the festival is called Elaneerattam, or pouring of tender coconut water.
