Kovalam Pilgrim Centre

The Cave Temple (vizhinjam)

Temples of Vizhinjam MosqueBelieved to go back as far as the eight century, the cave temple is located close to the centre of the village, a few yards from harbour road Kerala. Essentially, it is a huge granite boulder with an opening on its side, which is said to lead to an underground cave; but the passage now appears completely blocked. A half finished bas-relief of Shiva appears on the stone on either side of the opening and an idol of Sastha sits at women made offerings of gold at the cave, and a related incident led to the sudden, miraculous closure of the cave mouth is a must see place when out on a pilgrimage tour to Kerala.

Kovil Kadu (Bhagavathi Kshetram)

On a pilgrimage tour to Kerala one should never miss a chance to visit the Kovil Kadu Another temple believed to date from the ninth century this is reachable through a narrow path and is located on rising ground overlooking the sea. The sanctorum, at the centre of a courtyard, holds idols of seven deities. A separate Shiva temple stands a little away. Under the shade of venerable old trees and affording a great view of the Arabian Sea, the old shrine sits at a vantage point, now surrounded by a scattering of tiled and thatched houses.

Ayyappa Temple (Chowara and Poovar)

The Cave Temple - KeralaOne of the landmarks of Chowara is this temple perched on a hilltop, overlooking the vast expanses of the sea. The view from the temple is enchanting, with never-ending white sandy beaches and the blue sea in contrast.

Pulinkudi-Azhimala Shiva Temple

Besides a place of worship, this temple is also a scenic spot as it is strategically located on a hill close to the sea and is a must see when out on a pilgrimage tour to Kerala.

Amalothbhava Matha Church

This ancient church is located by the beach. A great location to hear Mass, which is held on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
